Happy Winter Break!


It’s almost time for Winter Break.  We have been busy working on our reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.  We have been reading books and completing story maps to practice the elements of a story and sequencing events.  We have written informational paragraphs about holidays and important people from history.  We have talked about social justice and environmental issues.  We have played Kahoot games to practice vocabulary, like money and shopping, position words, opposites, geography, energy, pollution, and natural disasters.  We have also worked on describing events in the future tense and past tense with regular and irregular past tense verbs.  We have worked on identifying cause and effect, synonyms, antonyms, genres, author’s purpose, and parts of speech.

The students also did a great job on their Holiday Projects.  They were required to write an informational paragraph explaining their favorite holiday from their native country.  They also had to tell about a favorite memory from this holiday and why it is their favorite.  They created a poster with pictures to illustrate this holiday and then presented their project to the class.

Happy Track Out Break! 9/22/17


I hope all of my students and their families have a wonderful 2 week break.  I have given homework for the break.  They have Raz-Kids Progress Charts to complete as they read books.  They have Picture Dictionary units to complete.  Some students also have 2 short articles to read.  I will give points, Wolf Dollars, and prize box treats to all students who give a great effort to complete this work.  If they need more time or cannot complete the work over the break, that is okay.  I told them not to stress about it.  I just wanted them to have opportunities to read and to learn and practice vocabulary if they would like to over the break.  I will not count it against them if they are unable to complete the work.

We have been working on building reading skills with folktales and chapter books.  We have worked on short and long vowel sounds and beginning and ending sounds.  We have been increasing vocabulary, practicing writing and speaking, and summarizing events.  Students should know how to complete a story map graphic organizer that includes: title, author, characters, setting, conflict, major events, resolution, and theme.  We will work on the skills of comparing and contrasting, sequencing, infer, and finding the main idea.  The students have also practiced author’s purpose.  They are to identify the author’s purpose with each of their Raz-kids books.  PIE (Persuade, Inform, or Entertain) We have also been working on parts of speech, future tense, and past tense.

Please encourage your children to work on their ESL homework if they have time.  Please also encourage them to work on USA Learns and Raz-Kids.  If you do not have a library card, please find your nearest public library and get a card so your students can check out books and use the computers.

We have been busy getting the school year off to a great start!  We have had a walk the schedule night and an open house.  Thank you to all of our parents who attended.  It was great to meet you all! 

Here are some of the things we have been doing in class:

  • asking and answering questions about ourselves and goals for the school year
  • reading stories
  • identifying characters, setting, problem/conflict, solution/resolution of stories
  • sequencing events in a story
  • retelling a story
  • writing a summary 

Starting the week of August 7, we will:

  • work in our picture dictionaries (topics include: classroom, instructions in school, & school vocabulary) 
  • learning to use Raz-kids to read books and develop reading & comprehension skills
  • learning to use USA Learns to develop English language skills


We will have an ESL picnic on Sunday, August 20th at 4:00 pm.  I will send home a flyer with more details and a location. Please save the date.  


Week 1 (July 24-28)

It is so great to see my former students again and to meet all of my new ones!  We are going to have a wonderful year learning English together.  This week we will be learning about our ESL classroom rules and expectations.  We will also review the technology expectations and procedures.  It is very important to bring back your signed technology forms so we can get started using our computers, laptops, and iPads in ESL.

We will also review our most current ACCESS scores and discuss the ESL exit criteria.  You must have a 4.0 in reading, 4.0 in writing, and a 4.8 composite (overall) score to exit.  We will take the ACCESS after the winter break.

We will create and present  “I Am ” poems to help introduce ourselves.

We will then do some work with the 4 C’s: Communication, Collaboration, Critical Thinking, and Creativity.

We will also review the main elements of a story this week.
